WCAG 2.1 AA Compliance

What WCAG 2.1 AA Means

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) are published by the W3C to make web content more inclusive.

Level AA is the most common compliance target for organizations. It balances accessibility with practicality, covering the majority of barriers faced by users.

Meeting WCAG 2.1 AA is often a legal requirement under frameworks like the European Accessibility Act (effective June 28, 2025).

Core Principles

WCAG 2.1 AA is organized under four principles (POUR):

Perceivable

Information must be presented in ways users can perceive.

  • Provide text alternatives for non-text content.
  • Ensure sufficient color contrast (minimum ratio 4.5:1 for normal text).
  • Offer captions for videos and transcripts for audio.

Operable

Interfaces must be usable with different input methods.

  • All functionality must be available via keyboard.
  • Provide clear navigation and avoid time limits that cannot be extended.
  • Ensure interactive elements are large enough for touch targets.

Understandable

Content and operation must be easy to comprehend.

  • Use consistent navigation and labeling.
  • Provide clear instructions and error messages.
  • Avoid overly complex language unless necessary.

Robust

Content must work reliably across technologies.

  • Ensure compatibility with assistive technologies (screen readers, voice input).
  • Use proper semantic HTML and ARIA roles.
